Standards and gotchas

The rules behind the answers. These are the details that cause most wrong purchases.

Apple TV (tvOS) apps

Apps for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K (tvOS).

  • Each platform has its own app store; an app being on one platform does not mean it is on another.
  • Older devices can lose support for an app; check the app maker's device list.

Google TV (Android TV OS) apps

Apps for Google TV devices, which run Android TV OS (Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, Google TV smart TVs).

  • Each platform has its own app store; an app being on one platform does not mean it is on another.
  • Older devices can lose support for an app; check the app maker's device list.

PS5 games

Games and apps for PlayStation 5 consoles.

  • Sony: the overwhelming majority of 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5, but a few are PS4-only, including Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One, Just Deal With It!, Robinson: The Journey, We Sing, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition and Shadwen (list subject to change; PlayStation Store marks them 'Playable on: PS4 only').
  • Some PS4 features may be unavailable or games may behave unexpectedly on PS5 (e.g., the SHARE menu during PS4 gameplay, PS4 tournaments, Second Screen app).
  • PS4 game discs can't be used with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.
  • PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs.

Nintendo Switch 2 games

Games for Nintendo Switch 2 (including Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives).

  • Nintendo: Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but certain Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Switch 2; Nintendo publishes a compatibility list, and third-party compatibility comes from each publisher.
  • Nintendo Switch accessories that do not work with Switch 2 include the Switch dock, the Switch HDMI cable, and regular microSD cards (Switch 2 needs microSD Express); the Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 but cannot power TV mode.

Xbox Series X|S games

Games built for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

  • Xbox: 'Most' Xbox One games are playable on Xbox Series X|S, not all; Xbox keeps a list of excluded titles on its support site.
  • Xbox Series S plays digital games only; it has no disc drive, so Xbox One game discs need an Xbox Series X.
  • Selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games are also playable via Xbox backward compatibility.

VESA 100 x 100 mm mounting pattern

Four mounting holes 100 mm apart horizontally and 100 mm apart vertically on the back of a TV or monitor.

  • A TV's VESA size is the hole spacing on its back, width x height in millimetres; a mount must list the same pattern (or a range that includes it).
  • Also check the mount's weight limit and screen-size range, and that the screws (e.g., M6 or M8) and any spacers match the TV.
  • Mount makers list standard patterns; a universal bracket may physically span other spacings within its range, but only listed patterns are checked here.
