The rules behind the answers. These are the details that cause most wrong purchases.

Brother DR730 drum unit

Drum unit (~12,000 pages) for the Brother TN730/TN760 laser family; toner sold separately.

  • Not a toner cartridge: a DR730 does not contain toner, and a TN760 does not contain a drum.

Brother LC406 / LC406XL INKvestment ink cartridges

Front-loading INKvestment cartridges for the Brother MFC-J4335DW; standard and XL are interchangeable.

  • LC406BK ~3,000 pages, LC406 C/M/Y ~1,500 pages; LC406XLBK ~6,000 pages, LC406XL C/M/Y ~5,000 pages.
  • In-box ink is rated by Brother as "up to 1-year of ink" at ~150 pages/month, not as a page yield.

Canon GI-21 MegaTank ink bottles

Refill bottles (pigment black 135 ml, dye cyan/magenta/yellow 70 ml) for Canon PIXMA G1220/G2260/G3260/G3270 MegaTank printers.

  • MegaTank bottle series are model-specific: the PIXMA G620 photo MegaTank uses six GI-23 dye inks, not GI-21.
  • Canon rates a full GI-21 set in the G3270 at up to 6,000 black and 7,700 color pages (default mode).
  • Bottle numbers differ by region; buy the series Canon lists for your model in your country.

Canon PG-260 / CL-261 ink cartridges

Two-cartridge system (pigment black + color) for Canon PIXMA TS5320, TS6420/TS6420a and TR7020/TR7020a.

  • Standard and XL (PG-260XL, CL-261XL) are interchangeable; Canon notes the printer needs one black and one color cartridge installed to operate.
  • Canon USA item codes carry an "AMR" (Americas) suffix (e.g., "PG-260 AMR"); cartridges sold for other regions may use different numbers.

Canon PG-275 / CL-276 ink cartridges

Two-cartridge system (pigment black + color) for Canon PIXMA TS3500/TS3700 and TR4700 series printers; standard and XL are interchangeable.

  • PG-275XL black holds 11.9 ml; CL-276 color holds 6.2 ml (Canon USA). XL versions fit the same slot.
  • Cartridge numbers can differ by region; buy cartridges sold for the printer's region (other regions' equivalents were not verified here).

Epson 104 EcoTank ink bottles (UK/Europe)

European EcoTank bottle series for models such as ET-1810, ET-2710/2720, ET-2810/2820 and ET-4700/4800 sold in Europe.

  • Regional: do not use 104 bottles in a US EcoTank; the US ET-4800 takes 522 bottles.
  • Epson UK rates one 104 set at 4,500 black / 7,500 colour pages.

Epson 232 / 232XL ink cartridges

Four individual Claria cartridges for Epson Expression Home XP-4200/4205/4250/4255 and WorkForce WF-2930/2940/2950/2970.

  • Standard black ~150 pages; 232XL black ~380 pages; standard color ~140 pages (Epson, XP-4200).
  • Epson states the XP-4200 "is designed for use with Epson cartridges only, not third-party cartridges or ink."

Epson 502 (T502) EcoTank ink bottles (US)

Keyed EcoFit refill bottles for US EcoTank ET-2700/2750/2760/2850/2980, ET-3700/3830/3850/3950 and ET-4750/4850/4950 series.

  • Not interchangeable with 522 bottles: ET-2850 and ET-3850 take 502, but ET-2800 and ET-4800 take 522.
  • Epson rates 502 replacement bottles in the ET-3850 at about 7,500 black / 6,000 color ISO pages.
  • "Epson T502" and "Epson 502" are the same US product (SKU T502120-S for black). Outside the US, EcoTank printers use different bottle series (e.g., 104/103 in Europe).
  • Part of the included ink is used for initial setup, so included-ink yields are lower than replacement bottles.

Epson 522 (T522) EcoTank ink bottles (US)

Keyed EcoFit refill bottles for US EcoTank ET-1910/2400/2720/2800/2900/4700/4800 series printers.

  • Look-alike trap: the EcoTank ET-2800 and ET-4800 use 522 bottles, while the similar-sounding ET-2850 and ET-3850 use 502 bottles. The two series are not interchangeable.
  • Epson rates 522 replacement bottles at about 4,500 black / 7,500 color ISO pages in the ET-2800 and ET-4800.
  • Region-specific: the same EcoTank model can take different bottle numbers outside the US (e.g., Epson UK lists the ET-4800 under the 104 EcoTank series).
  • "Epson T522" and "Epson 522" are the same US product (SKU T522120-S for black); the T prefix is a naming change, not a different bottle.

Epson 822 / 822XL ink cartridges

Four individual pigment cartridges for Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3820/WF-3823 and WF-4820/WF-4830/WF-4833/WF-4834.

  • Standard and XL are interchangeable.
  • Epson: "Epson printing system is designed to be used exclusively with Epson Genuine Cartridges."

HP 305 / 305XL ink cartridges (non-US regions)

Regional (EMEA/other) counterpart of HP 67 for DeskJet 2700/2800e and related printers; not usable in US-region printers.

  • HP cartridges are regionalized: the same-shaped cartridge carries a different number in other regions, and HP printers reject cartridges sold for a different region (HP Support Community documents a US printer rejecting cartridges bought in Mexico). Moving countries may require an HP-assisted region reset. HP 305 cartridges are not a substitute for HP 67 in a US printer even though the printers and cartridges look the same.
  • HP states these printers "use dynamic security measures to block cartridges using modified or non-HP circuitry" (HP product pages). Clone-chip third-party cartridges can stop working after a firmware update.

HP 67 / 67XL ink cartridges (US)

Two-cartridge system (black + tri-color) used by HP DeskJet 2700e/4100e and ENVY 6000e/6400e printers sold in the US; standard and XL sizes are interchangeable.

  • Standard and XL are interchangeable in the same slot: HP 67 black ~120 pages vs 67XL black ~240; HP 67 tri-color ~100 vs 67XL tri-color ~200.
  • HP cartridges are regionalized: the same-shaped cartridge carries a different number in other regions, and HP printers reject cartridges sold for a different region (HP Support Community documents a US printer rejecting cartridges bought in Mexico). Moving countries may require an HP-assisted region reset. Outside the US the equivalent cartridge is sold as HP 305 / 305XL (e.g., HP 305 black 3YM61AE, ~120 pages) and will not work in a US-region printer, and vice versa.
  • Models with an "e" suffix are HP+ enabled: if HP+ is chosen at setup, HP requires "exclusive use of Original HP Ink cartridges for the life of the printer", plus an HP account and an ongoing internet connection. Third-party or refilled cartridges will not work on an HP+-activated printer.
  • HP states these printers "use dynamic security measures to block cartridges using modified or non-HP circuitry" (HP product pages). Clone-chip third-party cartridges can stop working after a firmware update.

HP 910 / 910XL ink cartridges (US)

Four individual cartridges (K, C, M, Y) for HP OfficeJet Pro 8020e/8030e series printers sold in the US; standard and XL are interchangeable.

  • Standard and XL are interchangeable; HP 910XL black ~720 pages. HP's own pages disagree on HP 910 black standard yield (~250 on the cartridge page, ~300 on the OfficeJet Pro 8025e page). HP also lists a 916XL super-high-yield black for these printers.
  • HP cartridges are regionalized: the same-shaped cartridge carries a different number in other regions, and HP printers reject cartridges sold for a different region (HP Support Community documents a US printer rejecting cartridges bought in Mexico). Moving countries may require an HP-assisted region reset.
  • Models with an "e" suffix are HP+ enabled: if HP+ is chosen at setup, HP requires "exclusive use of Original HP Ink cartridges for the life of the printer", plus an HP account and an ongoing internet connection. Third-party or refilled cartridges will not work on an HP+-activated printer.
  • HP states these printers block cartridges using a non-HP chip (dynamic security).

HP Ireland lists the HP 937 (e.g., 937 black 4S6W5NE) for the same OfficeJet Pro 9125e — the regional counterpart, not interchangeable with HP 936 in a US printer.

  • TN223BK standard ~1,400 pages; TN227BK high yield ~3,000 pages.
  • Drums are separate: these printers use the DR223CL drum unit set (~18,000 pages).
  • In-box starter toners yield ~1,000 pages each (HL-L3270CDW).

Brother TN2420 black toner (UK/Europe)

European black toner for the HL-L2350DW family (~3,000 pages); counterpart of US TN760.

  • Regional numbering: US buyers should use TN730/TN760 for the HL-L2350DW; cross-region interchangeability was not verified.

Brother TN730 / TN760 black toner (US)

Black toner for Brother HL-L2350DW, HL-L2370DW, HL-L2390DW, MFC-L2710DW/L2750DW and DCP-L2550DW; TN730 and TN760 are interchangeable.

  • TN730 standard ~1,200 pages; TN760 high yield ~3,000 pages.
  • The drum is a separate part: these printers also need a DR730 drum unit (~12,000 pages), replaced far less often than toner. Buying toner alone does not replace the drum.
  • In-box starter toner yields only ~700 pages.
  • Region-specific numbering: Brother UK lists the HL-L2350DW with TN2420 toner, not TN760.

Brother TN830 / TN830XL black toner (US)

Black toner for Brother HL-L2400/2460/2480, DCP-L2640, MFC-L2760/2820/2900/2980 series; TN830 and TN830XL are interchangeable.

  • TN830 ~1,200 pages; TN830XL ~3,000 pages. Brother also sells a TN830V value high-yield version.
  • The drum is separate: these printers use a DR830 drum unit (~15,000 pages).
  • In-box starter toner yields ~700 pages.
  • Newer models replaced TN730/TN760: the HL-L2460DW and MFC-L2820DW do not take TN760.

  • Region-specific like other HP LaserJet toners: other regions use different cartridge numbers for the LaserJet Pro 4001 — check your printer's regional listing.
  • HP states these printers are "intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip" and use dynamic security to block cartridges with a non-HP chip; "Periodic firmware updates will maintain the effectiveness of these measures and block cartridges that previously worked." Remanufactured/refilled cartridges that reuse an HP chip are allowed.
  • HP also sells "e"-suffix variants (e.g., 4001dne, 4001dwe); HP+-enabled models require Original HP supplies once HP+ is activated — check the specific model page (HP+ status of these variants not verified here).
